RE: [haflingerfriends] Need advice- mare won't drink!

Tam:

Have you tried putting salt on her hay or in her grain if she gets any?

You could also try an electrolyte paste in a tube like the de-wormers come
in.

Does she have access to both the stall and outside? Our horses have
24/7/365 access and I notice when it rains a lot they do not seem to drink
as much water from the buckets. They certainly look fine, so I came to the
conclusion they are drinking water that has accumulated some where in the
pasture.

I would also check with your Vet if Lola is looking gaunt, this could turn
serious, she/he may have some answers also.

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Need advice- mare won't drink!

I know, I know..."You can lead a horse to water but you can't make 'em
drink"...but I've gotta try!

We're having a series of terrible rain storms (for us anyway) in California
and everything is pretty much flooded around our barn. Lola is normally very
easy going and she doesn't sweat this kinda stuff but for some reason she is
very stressed out. She's eating in this really aggitated fashion,
preoccupied with the rain coming down in the arena and won't touch her
water. Now she looks gaunt.

She refuses electrolyte powder (even with her favorite treats). I brought a
tub of water into her box stall (opposed to the auto waterer), tried turning
her out in the rain (cuz I thought she might relax more in the open) but so
far nothing has worked.

Getting very concerned she may colic if she doesn't start drinking
soon...any suggestions??

Thanks!
Tam
