I hope, at least, their friendliness will always be a trait for which we breed. And, I hope the haffie of the future won't be little more than a golden thoroughbred or creamy arab with haffies existing in color only. :(

Subject: [haflingerfriends] keeping Haflinger breed standards
Just a thought on this thread someone mentioned about seeing our Haflingers look the same in 100 years. Probably won't happen from what I've seen. The breed is changing in some ways, taller, slimmer, perhaps a hotter temperament? ? Perhaps someone in the know could eleborate on what's happening now. I haven't been to an event for over 4 or 5 years.
When we had our stallion classified, he passed but did poorly. He's cute but small and has a wonderful disposition, without being the heavy drafty type, probably middle of the road??? He was 3 years old, and well behaved for his first outing since he was a weanling.
The comment from the east coast judge after the inspection was " if this was 1988 this would be exactly the style of Haflinger stallion we would be looking for". I almost fell over when I heard that, I'll never forget that comment.
Apollo's dad is a very popular, versitile Haflinger stallion in the mid-east and his mom has nice bloodlines but doesn't look anything like Apollo, most of his looks I think come from his dad.
Anyway, after having attended a meeting the night before, if I remember correctly, the judges said the standards have not been changed. Clearly there is something happening if my horse would have been good in 1988 but isn't now?? His only "flaw" that I see is he didn't get very tall 13.2 hands perhaps and smaller than his sire or dam.
I would be interested in hearing from others on how this debate is going now.
Have a great weekend!
Cheryl In 23 degree Omak with about 6 - 7 inches of snow and waiting for more.
