Subject: [haflingerfriends] Haflinger standards and what can we do?
This has been a very interesting discussion and I sincerely appreciate all the different opinions and information being offered.
We have 5 registered Haflingers, 1 stallion and 4 mares, one being about 26 - 27 years old and still doing well. We haven't done much with them, but they are fat and happy. Only one of the mares would do well at an inspection but she's had a spinal injury as a youngster and probably couldn't be classified. She's beautiful, out of GOLD rated parents and has the longer neck, Arab-y head and almost 15 hands tall with the more pale color. Her disposition is pretty good, fairly Ho-Hum, curious and friendly. She was a brat when we bought her as a coming 3 year old.
Perhaps the AHR needs to pick judges that are a little more "forgiving" as to how they judge what the Haflinger characteristics are or find ones that don't discount an animal for a smaller height or less fancy appearance. I'm not talking about allowing any flaws, but a good horse is a good horse. A good judge will look at the overall horse and judge accordingly, the judges being used now only seem to want the new taller, lighter boned animals unless it's changed in the past few years since I participated. I don't think I'd do it again.
Our little old Haflinger mare, about 13.1 hands and very stout, nice neck, lovely head, big eyes and quiet (usually) attitude is from the early lines imported to America. She's what folks look at and say "WOW", what a pretty horse, but then visitors like all of them, especially our stallion who is small and very cute. When the older mare trots across the field, she almost floats, even when she's overweight. She was only used as a broodmare in her earlier days and was never broke to ride, but I suspect she would have been a wonderful, comfortable ride and cute as can be.
Cheryl in Omak, Wa. where we are getting rain, after 3 years I didn't realize we got rain this time of year. It's usually frozen and only snow!
