Re: [haflingerfriends] Eating Dirt

Marilyn
I have seen this also at my cousins pasture.Same thing except that the blocks there are right on the ground, they wont use a holder because some of the horses play w/ them. But here at home i use them and if i drop some on the ground or it seeps through i will put something over that spot to distract her.
I have also thought about a grazing muzzle, but have not wanted to see my girl throw a fit.

I'm wondering if a horse will eat dirt if it's deficient in a nutrient.  My hafie licked the ground where I'd dropped fragments of a mineral block which then dissolved.  Not good since his paddock is sandy!  I think he did it just because it tasted good as he's always had access to a block which he uses.

Would like your thoughts/experience on the use of muzzles on haflingers.

Thanks, everyone!  :)
