Re: [haflingerfriends] Early foals

I would stick to straw for bedding a newborn foal.  Small particles can be inhaled and can cause respiratory infections.  Straw keeps tfoals warm the air is warmed by their bodies and is trapped between the blades of straw much like down in a jacket.

I bred Trakehners for 20 years and just switched breeds last year.  The Haflingers are a hardy little horse but I am sure the foals are just as vulnerable as any other breed.  Good luck with your new foal.  I miss having them around all the time.

I live in Iowa and just found out my mares I bought may foal in Mar or Feb. Current temp here is 15 below without wind chill. Feb and Mar could bring the same temps. My husband suggested I bed them down when it's time in 14 inches of corn stock bedding. Cattle ranchers and lots of swine farmer's use it for bedding. Is it safe for haflingers or should I stick to straw and wood chips?
