# The iron content should be less than .5 parts per million.
High iron content reduces their desire to drink the water. Sometimes flavoring the water helps but getting rid of the iron works the best.
# The water should be warmer than "Barely Thawed" (32-40 degrees) during the winter months. The warmer the better; on up to luke warm. If the horse's pee is turning the snow red it is from drinking cold water. Warm the water and the red pee will disapear.
# Always have water avalible to them.
# Have salt/mieral avalible to them at all times.
# Make sure you don't have any trace amounts of stray electricial amperage getting into the water from heating elements. Especially if you have non metalic containers (plastic or rubber) A ground wire place into the water and connected to a ground ros will protect against this.
# Situate the water so that no one paticular horse can prevent another from drinking. Often big draft horses like to stand with their heads over the stock tank in the summer time (to stay cool) and will not allow the small horses to come up and drink.
