So much passion on this subject, and so many views, it's great that so many people hold strong opinions, and are prepared to have their say, I see that as very very healthy. If no one piped up it would mean that no one cares, and how sad would that be?
There are so many threads popping up that I'm struggling to decide where to have my say, I get easily lost and overwhelmed with the way that the posts appear and run on these YAhoo Group boards, I've decided just to jump in here.
I strongly believe that the registry as it is should stay, properly registered Haflingers should be the core and the backbone of our breeding stock.
Is there room for an extension of some sort, well yes probably, but in the real world of costs, and balancing costs and benefits who would gain what, and especially would the breed overall gain anything? I'm not sure it would, although I really do understand the fact that certain horses and individuals would see, or believe that they had gained in some way.
My ideal world.........
A central and undiluted registry for purebred, properly registered Haflingers, who, just to tread on some toes, reflect and maintain the original ideals of the Haflinger breed, they would not evolve into a more and more modern type, but would remain the dual purpose horse that I believe they were intended to be.
I would also see room for a part bred Haflinger Registry, same as the past bred Arab registrations, that allows people to acknowledge the Haflinger element, but also allows the careful crossing with other breeds to produce sports ponies, or other 'bred for purpose' types.
There may also be room for a Haflinger Affiliate registry, and this would pick up those animals that for one reason or another have fallen through the net and are in fact registerable Haflingers, lacking only their papers. Now personally I would question what benefit this would bring to anyone. and I can't make up my mind what I would do with the offspring of horses on this registry..hey I never said I had all the answers, but I think the discussion is at least valid.
When it comes to it, I have great sympathy with Jessies statement up there, while all my Haflingers ARE registered, my main riding horse Mr G, the Pintaloosa, isn't, and I love him dearly, even though I've no idea, and have no chance of finding out anything of his history. For those, the great majority of people, who neither breed nor want to show, the statement 'you can't ride papers is so true.
Just have to put this pic here

That right there is the most important thing about horse ownership, to me it's about the relationship, not the papers.
Denny in Sask, where it's warming up at last...-4*F and rising, I may ride today YIPEEE!
