I think the draft horse shoes you are refering to are called "scotch bottom" shoes. A friend of mine is a draft horse owner and driving enthusiast and I asked her about that type of shoeing after seeing so much of it on the draft horses at the PA Farm Show. She said that that goes back to how they trimmed and shoed horses for driving through the Scottish Bogs. It was so the horses had more foot surface area to lessen sinking in the bogs. It ended up becoming a style for drafts and is supposedly to meant to increase leg "action" for show. She also said it is not good for the horses over the long haul. Her blacksmith had his hands full getting the horse she now has back to a normal shaped hoof.
