Re: [haflingerfriends] Moldy Hay

I don't know everything about moldy hay but here are some views.
It happens when the hay is not properly dried before baling. When you open a bale and dust flies up it is not good. You can shake the flake to get the dust out. If the flake has visible mold, don't use it. Moldy hay smells different from good well cured hay. Horses develop emphysema (heaves) if they eat moldy hay.

Do any of you know anything about moldy hay? What does mold do to a horse? Will they naturally avoid it? Can we tell if hay is moldy just by looking at it?

Please advise.

Sincerely,

Marilyn
