I have been feeding salt with grain for many years. The high moisture in my
area makes it impossible for the 4 pound salt licks to last long - they just
disintegrate. The horses were destroying them in a matter of days, and I
was so frustrated, I asked my vet. He said feed 2 tablespoons IODIZED salt
per day for an adult horse. I buy salt at Walmart in the 1 one pound
containers for 33-cents each. They are easy to store that way, as larger
quantities tend to cake with moisture. And yes, the horses do drink more
water with salt in their (cup of) grain. And before I get responses about
something being lacking in their diet - they also get vitamins formulated
for the Northwest, as have access to salt in their turnout. They just don't
have a salt lick in their stalls.
