Re: [haflingerfriends] soiled tail/encrusted manure

Susan,

I was new to Haflingers last year.  I show in breed and Dressage classes.  I dreaded the tails and manes.  I was frantic last year to keep them clean and detangled.  I tried several suggestions for getting their tails clean.

Not long ago a new Haffie friend gave me the best advice ever.  She told me to spray simple green on the tail and allow it to set for 15-20 minutes and then brush it out when it dried or rinse it out with a hose.  I sprayed the simple green on my colts super huge tail and began to groom him in the cross ties.  I looked back at his tail to see a winters worth of mud, urine and manure falling out of his tail into black puddles around his feet.  I was elated by the sight!!!  I took him to the wash bay shortly after and rinsed all of the simple green out of his tail, IT WAS VEY CLEAN!!!!   I have always mixed a good amount of a hair conditioner with water in a spray bottle to use on my Trakhener's tails.  I sprayed it on Nick's tail, combed it through and braided it up for the night.  When I took it down the next day it was so clean and soft.  I NO LONGER FEAR THE HAFLINGER TAIL AND MANE!  Showing this year will be so much easier.   Good luck
they are so much fun and they make me laugh all the time.  Meg in Ohio

My new mare Camryn came with not just a heavily soiled tail which I can deal with.  Being as she's still getting used to me, (just came here Wed.)  as much as I want to get it off, I hesitate to make our first few days painful.  I'm afraid it has/will cause skin probs if I don't get it cleaned.  Being it's winter I don't want to hose it.
Any ideas/thoughts would be appreciated,
Thanx all,Susan
