How very frustrating for the last record setter. She didn't holf her title long.
I've been learning so much about the haffie by following the "friends" posts and reading in on the debates. I thought it was very interesting that there seems to be a rivalry of ownership (so-to-speak) between Italy and Austria over the origins of the haffie breed.
I've been googling maps of that region, looking up the city names you provided,...even looked at an 1886 map of the region post "re-unification".. (I don't know Italy's history at all but have seen that Italy has changed shape over the centuries.) What struck me as interesting about the Tyrol region is that while South Tyrol is in Italy today the cities and even the street names are Germanic. So the Austrian people must've influenced the region which would account for the rivalry.
Also, when I think of that region I always think of the Disney movie Pinocchio when I think of haffies. (Now you see where I get a lot of my "knowledge" -- cartoons and comics.. LOL) I don't know if the Disney people did their research, but the costumes of the characters look, to me, so very folk German.
Perhaps the rivalry remains outside political boundaries and is based more on culture? I don't know. Your thoughts?

Subject: [haflingerfriends] Re: New Haflinger Jumping Record
Hi Karen and all,
actually the world record has been broken again: The new World Record in Jumping for Haflingers is 1.65 meters (which is almost 5'5"!) and was set by Heidi Zellhofer from Niederösterreich (one of 9 Austrian provinces, and one of the provinces organized by the ARGE, Kerstin keeps holding European geography lessons ;-) ) and Escada. I don't know the pedigree of Escada or how old or tall she is, but here's a link with pictures: http://www.reitspor tnews.at/ de/index. php?option= com_content& view=article& id=1020:fest- der-pferde- wien-der- haflinger- hochsprungweltre kord-ist- gefallen- heidi-zellhofer- noe-ueberwindet- mit-escada- 165-meter& catid=2:news
Best wishes from snowy Sweden
Kerstin
