RE: [haflingerfriends] Re: Cart Question.... update...

Hi Mandy....

Yes, definitely a fine harness type rig of some sort. Actually, I was
looking for a used complete cart, but figured a look-see wouldn't hurt.
A learning experience...I learned a lot from the comments from our list.
I have a leather harness that I bought recently from a list member, so one
thing to check off the list. I love cleaning tack so that's not a problem
for me, LOL... I clean other peoples tack for FUN!

As for the Martin's Auction I will look that up, but sort of doubt any
thing there would be in a price range I could manage. I'm on disability and
haven't seen any 4 wheel vehicles that I could afford. With some saving I
figure I might manage around $1000 but not much over that. I can't even get
a new Meadowbrook for that, so while I save I just look around to see what
comes up.

I'm not looking for a fancy carriage for arena work, I want a sturdy
cart or wagon that I can drive on hard pack desert dirt roads....

What Blue Gig?? I must have missed something?

Thanks for the input though.... I never can afford my champagne tastes on
my beer budget....

Suzy

Hi Suzy,
Guess you had an educational day! I think what you stumbled upon is half a
Saddlebred show cart called a Viceroy. Here's a link to what I think it is
http://www.studbook.co.za/Society/saddlehorse/sport.php
This vehicle isnt suitable for a Haflinger!
I would personally skip the antique vehicles and go with something new. Its
more than likely to be stronger, safer than an old one of which you have
control over restoration if you didnt do it yourself. But first you need to
decide what kind of Harness you're going to use. Draft harness is HEAVY.
Biothane is super easy to clean. Leather? Brass takes hours to polish.
Chrome only seconds! Black or brown? You'd have more possiblities with
pleasure harness/breast plate. The cart that Denny found - the blue GIG -
could be restored to natural finish and would look SWEET on a haffie. There
are many types of gigs, formal to country, and that one was a dream. I wish
it was in VA!
Finding a carriage that floats your boat, is in your price range and is safe
shouldnt be that hard. If you look at the Carriage Association and ADS
online to see their advertisements could help you find a carriage
restoration shop or store that stocks. Martins' Auction from PA has at least
one huge CA auction a year where they ship containers of carriages from the
east coast to the west. Go to one of those sales! You asked about COB size.
Its also called 3/4 size carriage. It means between pony and a horse. Many
Morgans fall in that category.
Sorry you didnt find your dream carriage! You will next time.
