Re: [haflingerfriends] New (and first) Haflinger finally arrives!!

IF she has not been well fed for the last year, she might well be deficient in magnesium (this could explain her "jitters") - You can add a few (to 10) grams of magnesium from magnesium oxide (I get mine from Horse Tech and feed 1-3 of the provided scoops) or just buy something like Remission or Quiescence, which might be more palatable. I would skip the bran, although it's phosphorus level may help balance the high calcium in beet pulp. Ordinary "salad oil" (soy, corn, canola) is great for putting weight on - up to a cup or two a day (introduce gradually). Being a haffie, she will probably not need more than good quality hay to maintain weight unless you ride hard, though a bit of beet pulp is a great carrier for whatever supplements you need to balance your hay (the "best" supplement is going to depend on what's missing from what hay and grain/pellets you feed). You may do well to just use a "ration balancer" with your good hay (Purina Enrich, Barn
Bag, etc)

Check with your vet on worming. If she is really bad, too strong a wormer can cause colic from the die off and one with too many worms having resistance would be a waste of money. I'd probably start with a "pyrantel" compound, but please check with your vet first.

I am thinking I need to worm asap, then build up to giving her sugar beet pulp, bran and ? (what) somekind of weight gain feed. Afraid to give sweet feed as she is already hyper. I would also like to get suggestions for a really good vitamin and mineral supplement. Feet are all different sizes too!Help, annie
