Subject: [haflingerfriends] A fun challenge!
I think it would be fun if we all checked our horses measurements... NOT to get another arguement going, but more to understand in concrete terms what our Haflingers look like (well, measurement wise) compared to the old records, and compared to one another.
NO JUDGEMENTS HERE! We are just stating facts.
I found what Kerstin to say about tape vs stick measurements to be REALLY interesting. So I decided last night when I brought the horses from the wet to get a few measurements on my two Haflingers.
I will do this in Centimeters, as it is more precise.
If you all want to go check the conversions, here is a good website to bookmark:
http://www.onlineconversion.com/horse_height.htm
The stick measurement was done using an aluminum stick with a little level do-hicky on top (I am smarter with horses than with tools)
The tape height was done by pinning tape at 0 on the ground, bringing it straight up till touching it to the body at the widest part and then holding it to the body up to the withers.
Cannon measurement was done about midway on the cannon, at the narrowest measurement. I moved the tape up and down to find the smallest number.
Lucky (M-Gone West) 9 year old gelding
Stick height: 142.24 cm
Tape height: 152.4 cm
difference of: 10.16 cm
Girth width: 179 (923 pounds on weight tape)
Cannon: 19.7 cm (7.75")
Nightingale 4 year old mare
Stick height: 149 cm
Tape height: 154 cm
difference of: 5 cm
Girth width: 175 cm (863 pounds on weight tape)
Cannon: 20.3 cm (8")
Now here is my disclaimer... I am not an expert, and I very well may have not measured in the correct manner. But I did measure both of them the same way, and thier results really differed from tape to stick. Hopefully my math is right, but if not, feel free to correct me!!
Lucky's was much further off (10.16 cm difference) whereas Nighties was less so (5 cm difference). Lucky could stand to lose a few pounds, and Nightie most likely will gain a little more girth with age, but probably not much, as she will be getting worked more too.
I think it is interesting to compare. Maybe I am nuts. It is too yucky to ride right now. I have soggy paddocks to clean, and I am avoiding it! LOL!
