For Raven we found her down in the snow in the pasture, she had obviously been struggling, and at first we thought that she had colic. We managed to dig away some snow and swing her round a little, and she got up with our help, and we managed to get her into the barn. She was lacking co ordination, had elevated respiration but normal temp. At this stage we believed that her issues on her right side were just due to her been laying on it.
The next day it became obvious that there was something serious going on,and that's when the vet came to the conclusion that she had probably had a stroke.
I'm not sure what the prognosis is in usual stroke cases, but you have to remember that with Raven we were already dealing with a compromised system. We gave her a couple of days with painkillers and meds to try and control inflamation, etc, but although she at first looked like she may come round she was obviously still struggling, and last night I looked at her and knew that we weren't going to get her back, the struggle was getting to her.

I hope this makes some sense, not very helpful maybe, but it's the best I can do at the moment.

When you feel like it, please share. Also I was looking at your pictures this morning, and was wondering about Raven. Wasn't she the mare who arrived at your place showing health problems? Geri in sw Oregon, where the clouds have moved in and we may have rain soon. I must clean corrals soon.
