[haflingerfriends] Re: Raisng Funds (long)

Why give horses that look like Haflinger's papers? To me this is a slap in the face to breeders. If that happened I'd ask what's the point in registering my pure bred Haflinger's when anything that looks like a Haflinger can get papers as well, need be if they have breeding rights or not. I'd love to save the money on DNA and registration! Now with saying that I do think the AHR needs to let pure bred unregistered horses register. As long as it can be proven through DNA. Another thing is the transfer issue, horses that get lost papers or go through a transfer wrong, they should be able to get a hardship into the registry as they are pure bred.

I had a filly out of one of my mares that was out of a silver stallion. The lady who bred her got into a financial issue with the stallion owner and the breeding certificate was never sighed. Now I could have went back and ask the breeder for the paper and got it done but due to the AHR's current rules she would have still been unregistered as the owner from her to me is MIA. I have no idea how to get a hold of her to sign a piece of paper. Now I sold this filly grade the people didn't want to breed so I didn't care, now the filly is with some one else and she would love her papers! I'd love to help her but again as the rules stand she can't get them. This filly would be an easy one to paper as both her sire and dam are DNA'd and all it would take is a DNA to prove the pairing.

I am not for letting horses that may have registered parents be registered if they were and accident (bred underage). Again goes back to what's the point in registering in the first place. Having registered horses means quality in my eyes. It says that someone put time into thinking about the breeding decision, they chose the best mare or stallion, they cared for the mare during her pregnancy and then foaled out a foal and sent in its papers. This says quality, if not heart. If any horse that looks like a Haflinger can be registered we will not have pure bred Haflinger's. Not unless the AHR made people geld or spay there horses to get papers. Which is a little outrageous.

Seriously if the AHR decided to give regular papers to unregistered horses or cross breeds I will not breeding Haflinger's. I pride myself in having pure bred Haflinger horses. All of my guys can be traced back. I do not want to have to get a 13 generation pedigree for every single horse I look at in the future so that I know it is pure bred. I have seen pure bred Arabians who have a clean pedigree for 6 generations or more pop out a LOUD paint foal. I don't want to have a Haflinger pop out a grey colt and still be deemed a Haflinger because it's pedigree is clean for the 5 or 6 generations that is shown on the pedigree. I won't take that risk. The biggest thing that can happen to any of my horses is dark manes or color impurities. They will all throw the Haflinger type. Now if we let in unregistered horses there is a chance that whatever they are crossed with can pop up. I will seriously consider spaying any mare that I breed that is not up to the WHF standard. I geld my stud colts if they show a hit of imperfection and I am super picky on who my horses go to. I have responsibilities as a breeder. If for any reason one of my sale horses Haflinger or not needs a new home they come back to me. I am in an elderly couples will so that my horse comes back to me if they pass away. With saying that I didn't even breed that horse!!

This is the only way I can see for the unregistered or cross bred Haflinger's…. Have a cross breed registry. Like the Arab registry, one of the parents MUST be a registered Haflinger. The other doesn't matter maybe it's another Haflinger that had never gotten it's papers in and can't prove DNA or maybe it's the clyd/welsh/tb/paint/fino down the street. Doesn't matter. The main reason for this would be so that the registered animal would have documented proof that it had sired or foaled out another foal. It would just help to keep track and let breeders or buyers know that yeah this registered Haflinger mare had a colt out of an Andalusian. As of now you can buy a horse and there is no documents saying that foaling even happened. It would also be nice for stallions as well. I would have it stop there, do not have another registry outlet for these horses. If said Haflinger cross was bred the paper trail stops the AHR would not give out papers for any reason. Only horses out of ONE pure bred registered Haflinger could register in the cross bred registry. This is the only way I can see it working in my eyes. That way the AHR can get more income and it is another avenue for breeders. Like dare I mention the Spotted Haflinger's. They can be registered as a cross as long at one of the parents is a Registered Haflinger. I own a Haflinger stallion and have been asked by several if I'd consider crossing him with none Haflinger mares. At this time I would say no just because there is no way to document what he has produced in the registry. If they were to have a cross bred registry I would consider it depending on the mare and I'd require that the foal be registered in the cross Haflinger registry.

Another thing is that the AHR may offer Cross Haflinger's a point program like they do the Pure bred's maybe classes at shows? Its an idea, embraces the crosses and keep the Haflinger breeding pool clean.

Dare I step down from my soak box to pull up another…. The AHR fees and perks as I will call them. That will have to wait for my next post!
