I think you, John and Beth have brought up some good points. I also think that many registered haflinger owners in the western states(non breeders) may not be joining as they do not have any AHR shows or events available to them (except the inspection)on the west coast.
Once they have their haflinger inspected, if they do, they may not feel connected to the AHR. Even with the show tracking points recognition system. It appears there would be more dressage individuals participating if the dressage was separate from showing. To me, it's like comparing apples to oranges. A person has more chance of more points in one large horse show(more classes), than in a dressage show where it's more difficult to win/place in one or three classes when the win is based on a percentage and you have a very high number of competitors. Same with eventing compared to a horse show and marathon
driving compared to driving classes(pleasure, draft, ladies, gents, etc.) These are just other things AHR might consider.
