[haflingerfriends] Re: Into the fold ....breeding out the Drafty

Carole,

I Figured showing pictures was a heck of a lot easier than trying to type out an explanation. That first stallion I listed, Max, is what I truley fell in love with when I first saw him in person three years ago. I never liked his pictures all that much, but they aren't the greatst. I will post some pictures of him that I took and let you all know...in fact I think I've shared some of his pictures here before. His owner is also a firm 'drafty' lover of the haflingers. She inspires me with my haflinger dreams of breeding and such. Smart lady with TONS of knowledge

I have seen a number horses belonging to the people who have posted, and I have to say, even though some people feel their horse is "drafty" I don't agree. I think they are perfect, right in the middle of the road Haflingers.

I have personally met and ridden a few 13 hand Haflingers who are looney as March hares, and a few who are horse sized (over 14.2) who are completely sane and trustworthy. I see no correlation between height and temperment.

The ones I have met, have had good sized cannons as well, not at all fine boned. As far as I know, they had good minds, but to really know that I would have had to have ridden them all. I rode one once in VA, who I would love to have seen trained up for dressage, as his movement was terrific. He seemed pretty darn sane too... and very smart.

I haven't been to Europe, so I don't know much about those. I have been to the East (Virginia) and met a number of Haflingers there at the first East Coast Haflinger gathering. The ones I met there were all pretty much of standard size. I also have owned a Haflinger who came to me from Virginia, and he was 14.2.

I am not saying that all haflingers have that head today, it is sought after however, and known by almost all breeders to be the "old style" head that people wish they had more of today!
