[haflingerfriends] Re: In all the discussion...Draft/Pleasure

I really think that many who are concerned about the 'draft' type Haflinger being gone should not be worried. When you head out to MANY of the breeding farms, or go to the shows (especially county fairs), there are a LOT of draft type Haflingers out there.

The issue is, they aren't advertised or promoted the way the breeders of the sport type Haflingers do. Many draft types do not have the websites, nor do they advertise heavily in the magazines. In all reality, in my opinion it is QUITE HARD to find what many are calling the 'modern' type Haflinger. And remember, TYPE is just ONE aspect of the inspection process, ONE score, that is all, you still have NINE other parts of the horse to score.
I know people are surprised when they come to our farm in the winter and see the Haflingers without their blankets, all fuzzy, hairy and fat, with the feathers on their legs etc. They certainly don't look like what we advertise in the magazines or on the website. In show season we 'peel' their legs (trim ALL the hair off the legs very closely) 6 weeks before the first show, and then keep them trimmed the rest of show season. Then, the constant workouts 5 times a week keeps them in top shape, neck sweats, and throw in the blankets and they look slimmed up, trimmed up or more 'modern'. Come in the winter and they look like fat, little ponies! :)
As Dawn said, our farm broodmares are 57-58 1/2 inches tall bone is 7 1/4 7 3/4 in. Our stallion is 59 in and bone is 7 3/4. We have one four year old mare who is 60.5 inches tall and her bone is 8, and she currently is not in our breeding program. Now, that said, we aren't breeding for the tall, giants, however I LOVE the big geldings, even though I don't breed for them, I buy them to perform when I can find them. Usually, I get them from DRAFT Haflinger breeders. :) Yep, you heard me right. 60 inches plus head to the draft hitch haflinger breeders barns, you will find them there.

So, there is always a place for the draft and pleasure type Haflingers. They are still being bred, both styles, just one type is more heavily advertised than the other in my opinion. Head to any county fair, and the draft Haflinger is still there LOTS of them, and AHR still supports both draft and pleasure style, and equally a good Haflinger SHOULD be able to do both disciplines well.

I have the drafty type mares, both have the old style smaller head, Missy's is amazing am hoping she passes it on to her foal. I am hoping for something great (of course) and if she throws a nice foal am considering showing even though I would have to travel. Those of us who love the drafty type aren't wanting to see it disappear. I would like to suggest writing to the board that a division be made for the drafty types so that they are judged and classified together rather than given a lower rating because they don't meet the modern standard. Not a sub division because they are purebred, just a different class or instruct the judges that points need to be rewarded for confirmation of a draft type. This might encourage a small group of breeders to keep a few drafty studs for those of us who prefer them. Over breeding for any specific trait can cause problems in the long run, and keeping more bloodlines and their traits can only protect the breed for the future.

Would like to see in the next meeting minutes saying they received alot of requests, that is how change is made;-)
