[haflingerfriends] Re: fencing

Hi Lisa,

I live on 32 acres and the horses have a 3 acre pasture and I have a quarter acre pasture to be able to move horses around. Plus one pipe corral pen that I use if someone gets hurt or for horses that come here for training on occassion.

My landlords have the fencing as NON barbed wire or barbless wire, 5 strands high, and when I brought my horses here we spent a day running two strands of hotwire up. It is great! the horses stay away from the fence at all times, unless we have a rainstorm that shorts it out somewhere and I have to go fix it. lol. They figure our real quick when it isn't on.

As for your concern about not wanting to use hotwire becuase of small children being around, well, they too will also learn not to touch the fence. My landlord has grandchildren ages 3-12 that come here and LOVE to visit with my horses. They have all learned to NOT feed the horses or try to visit them without an adult because the fence will 'bite' them as they said. lol. it is not enough voltage to hurt them, it is a pulsing hot wire, but it is enough to teach them.

So I say go with the hot wire. it is the most economical way to go if you want to keep your fence in check, and kids. :)
